2009 Pontiac G8
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2009 Pontiac G8 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in La Colonia in Oxnard. He had a 2009 Pontiac G8 and one key to his name. That key had been through some things. The head was cracked and the blade had a wobble in the ignition. He wasn't locked out yet, but he knew it was coming and wanted a spare before it got worse.

He figured it was a simple copy. Cut a new one, done.

I explained what the G8 actually needs. The blade matters, but so does the chip inside the key head. A cut blade with no programmed transponder will crank the engine and kill it immediately. The immobilizer reads the chip on every start attempt. No match, no go.

So we did it right. I decoded his worn key, cut a new one to match, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to register the new transponder. Then I had him start the car three times in a row while I watched. Third start is when you find out if the registration held.

It held. He drove off with a working spare and still had his original key as a backup.

He had called the dealer earlier that week just to ask. They told him to bring it in, and they'd need to order parts to VIN. He was looking at days of waiting and a bill that made him pause. He said my visit cost a fraction of what they wanted and was done before lunch.
