How Pontiac G6 Key Systems Changed Over the Years
Pass-Key III Transponder
Your 2005 or 2006 G6 uses a Texas 4D transponder chip, also called ID45. That chip talks to GM's Pass-Key III immobilizer system every time you turn the ignition. It is a straightforward transponder key with three buttons and a standard blade. Programming can be done on-board, which means no fancy dealer software required.
ID46 Chip with Passlock
GM switched your 2007 or 2008 G6 to an ID46 chip inside a remote head key. The remote and transponder are now built into one unit instead of a separate fob. Your immobilizer system is Passlock, and programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and write the key to your car's computer.
Passlock II Security Upgrade
Your 2009 or 2010 G6 still uses the ID46 chip in a remote head key, but GM bumped the security to Passlock II. Same three buttons, same standard blade, same CR2032 battery. We handle these with OBD-II programming on-site, no tow to the dealer needed.
Which Key Does Your G6 Use?
A traditional key with a chip hidden inside the plastic head. The remote fob is separate from the key itself.
Your lock, unlock, and trunk buttons are built right into the key head. One piece does everything.
Same remote head design as the 2007-2008 models, but paired with the upgraded Passlock II security system.

Common Pontiac G6 Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
We check the transponder chip in your key head. On 2005-2010 G6s, the Texas 4D and ID46 chips can fail after years in a California glovebox. If the chip cannot authenticate, the car cranks but refuses to start. We test on-site and program a new key if dead.
Passlock Sensor Malfunction
Owners think the key is bad when the culprit is the Passlock sensor inside the cylinder. The sensor tells the computer to allow start. Failure: the G6 goes into theft mode. We see this constantly on 2007-2010 models. Sensor replacement or bypass; we diagnose on-site.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Remote buttons stop working but the key starts the car. a dead CR2032, a five-dollar fix you can do at home. Pop the fob open with a coin, swap the battery positive side up, snap it back. If buttons do not respond after a fresh battery, corrosion on the internal contacts is the likely cause.
Key Blade Wear
The standard blade on 2009-2010 G6 keys wears down faster than expected. Years of turning the ignition and door cylinder grind the cuts until the key barely catches the tumblers. Eventually it will not turn, and you are stranded. We cut a fresh blade from the car's lock code, not from your worn key.
Can You Program a G6 Key Yourself?
Yes, you can program a key yourself on 2005-2006 models using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure. You will need a pre-cut transponder key, then cycle the ignition through three 10-minute-and-30-second ON cycles. The whole process takes about 30 minutes. Keep in mind this erases all previously programmed keys. If you already have a working key, the add-key procedure takes under a minute.
The same 30-minute relearn procedure works on 2007-2008 G6s. You can also add a key in seconds if you have an existing programmed key. For all-keys-lost situations, the relearn is your DIY option, but the blade must be cut first. If the relearn fails, OBD-II programming with professional tools is the backup.
Same deal as the 2007-2008 models. The on-board relearn works, but Passlock II can be pickier about timing. If the security light will not cooperate after multiple attempts, the ECM may need a professional reset. We handle those with our OBD-II tools on-site in Simi Valley, Camarillo, or wherever you are.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Pontiac G6 had a starring role in the 2007 film Transformers as the "Agent's car." It was a surprising pick for a blockbuster, but GM used the Epsilon platform across several models, and the G6's sleek coupe lines made it the most photogenic of the bunch. Not bad for a mid-size sedan that shared its bones with the Chevy Malibu.
