Got a call from a guy at The Collection at RiverPark in Oxnard. His 2005 G6 GT would crank, run for about two seconds, then shut off. He thought it was fuel. Already had a buddy come look at it in the parking lot, already pulled the fuel pump relay and put it back. Nothing changed.
I asked one question on the phone: is the SECURITY light on solid? He checked. Yep.
That is PK3 doing exactly what it does. The Body Control Module reads the transponder in the key head during crank. If it does not like the response, the BCM kills the fuel injectors after a couple seconds. The engine is fine. The fuel pump is fine. The car just thinks someone is stealing it.
When I got there, I tested his original key with my diagnostic tool. The transponder was reading intermittent. The resistor pellet inside the key head was cracked, probably from years of bouncing on a keychain. Common failure on these.
Cut a new B111-PT blank, programmed the PK3 transponder through the OBD port using the existing BCM pin code, and the car fired right up and stayed running. Whole thing took about 25 minutes.
He had been looking at a tow to the dealer and days without the car. Instead he drove it home the same afternoon.
