2009 Pontiac G6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why can't I just get one copied at the hardware store?

The key blade unlocks the door and turns the ignition cylinder. The transponder chip inside the plastic head talks to the vehicle security system. When you turn the key, the car reads the chip. If the chip isn't there, or isn't programmed to that car, the engine won't run even if the key turns fine. Hardware store key machines copy the blade cut only. They have no way to program the chip inside the head.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2009 G6 key?

Professional automotive programming tools that communicate directly with the vehicle through the diagnostic port. The G6 is old enough that the programming process is well-documented and the equipment handles it cleanly without dealership involvement or special access credentials. I also carry a dedicated key cutting machine in the van, so the blank gets cut on site to match your lock. No waiting on parts, no tow, no drop-off.

Q: I have one working key for my G6. Can you add a second without losing the first one?

Yes, and this is actually the easier scenario. When at least one working key is present, adding a second is a clean process. The existing key stays enrolled and the new one gets added alongside it. Both work after. All-keys-lost, where you have zero working keys, is a different job with a few more steps, but it's still handled on site. Either way you don't need a tow to the dealer.

Q: My G6 starts fine sometimes and other times it just cranks. Could this be a key issue?

It can be. On these vehicles, an intermittent no-start with normal cranking is a known pattern when the transponder chip inside the key head is failing or the key has been on a heavy keychain that stressed the connection over time. The chip doesn't need to fail completely to cause problems. A partial read is enough to leave you stranded. Check whether the issue follows one specific key or happens with all of your keys.

2009 Pontiac G6 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy up in North Ventura. His 2009 G6 would crank fine but wouldn't start, and he'd already replaced the battery in his car twice thinking that was it. He mentioned he'd had a spare key made at a hardware store a few months back and had been using that one daily.

That was the answer before I even pulled up.

I got there and tried his original key. Started right up. Tried the hardware store copy. Crank, crank, nothing. The cut was close enough to turn the cylinder, but the transponder chip in the original had never been replicated. The copy was just metal.

He looked a little embarrassed. "I thought any key place could do it." A lot of people think that. The cut is only half the job on these.

I programmed a new key on site, verified it started cleanly, and made sure his original was still functioning too. He asked about the dealer. His buddy had gone the dealer route on a different GM a couple years back and waited several days for a parts order. He saved a good chunk and was driving again before noon.

That's most of what I do on these G6 calls. Not complicated, just needs the right equipment and someone who already has the key blank in the van.

Pontiac G6 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2009 Pontiac G6 key have remote buttons on it?▼

No. The 2009 G6 transponder key is a chip key only, no remote buttons, no fob battery. It starts the car and that is it. Lock and unlock is done at the door with the key blade, or through a separate key fob if your car came with one. What we are cutting and programming here is the ignition key itself, which carries a transponder chip in the plastic head.
