How Solstice Keys Changed Over the Years
Base Model Transponder Key
Your base Solstice uses a standard blade transponder key with a Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip inside the head. No buttons, no remote, no battery. You turn it in the ignition and the Pass-Key III+ system reads the chip before it lets the engine start. Simple, reliable, and straightforward to replace on-site.
GXP High-Security Key
Your GXP uses the same Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip as the base model, but the blade is a high-security cut. That means a standard key machine cannot duplicate it. We carry specialized cutters on every truck that handle the GXP's B99 profile, so we cut it right in your driveway.
Remote Head Key
Your Solstice with the integrated remote has a 3-button remote head key. It still uses the Philips ID46 (PCF7936) chip and Pass-Key III+ immobilizer, but the remote functions, lock, unlock, and trunk, are built into the key head. Uses a CR2032 battery and requires OBD-II programming for the remote portion.
Which Key Does Your Solstice Use?
A metal key with a thick plastic head. No buttons, no battery. The transponder chip is hidden inside the head and communicates with your ignition when you turn it.
Looks similar to the base key but the blade has a more complex cut pattern. This high-security profile requires a specialized cutter that most hardware stores do not have.
A chunkier key with three buttons built into the head for lock, unlock, and trunk. The transponder chip and remote electronics are all in one unit.

Common Solstice Key Problems
Transponder Sync Failure
First we check whether your Pass-Key III+ system still recognizes the transponder. A battery replacement, jump start, or BCM glitch can knock the sync. If the security light is flashing and the engine will not crank, a key relearn fixes it without replacing anything.
High-Security Blade Wear (GXP)
GXP owners think their ignition is going bad when the problem is a worn key blade. The high-security B99 profile on GXP keys wears faster than a standard cut, and once depths are off by a couple thousandths, the ignition will not turn smoothly. We measure the blade first and cut a fresh one on-site if the issue.
Immobilizer BCM Fault
Your Solstice will not start, theft light solid. Usually a BCM fault, not a bad key. The BCM is the brain behind Pass-Key III+, and when it fails it locks out every key. We read the PIN from the module and reprogram your keys in Oxnard or Camarillo wherever you are stuck.
Can You Program a Solstice Key Yourself?
The base and GXP transponder keys can be programmed using GM's on-board 10-minute relearn procedure. You cycle the key to ON for about 10 minutes and 30 seconds, repeat three times, and the new key registers. Timing is critical, and a mistake can lock you out, but it is technically possible without tools.
If you already have a working key, the 2006-2007 models let you add a new transponder key by starting the engine, removing the original, and inserting the new key within 10 seconds. Quick and simple when it works.
There is no on-board procedure for programming the remote buttons on your Solstice key fob. The lock, unlock, and trunk buttons require OBD-II programming with professional tools. That is where we come in.

Most people do not know this: the Pontiac Solstice shares its Kappa platform with the Saturn Sky and the Opel GT. All three roadsters rolled off the same GM architecture, which means their key systems are essentially interchangeable. Three different badges, one engineering family.
