Does the 2009 Pontiac Solstice key have any remote buttons?

No. The 2009 Solstice uses a transponder key with no remote, no fob, and no buttons at all. It's a traditional key that turns in the ignition. There's a transponder chip embedded in the key head that communicates with the immobilizer, but nothing about this key locks or unlocks the doors remotely. If you want keyless entry on this car, you'd be looking at an aftermarket add-on, which is a separate conversation. What is a transponder key and why won't the car start if the chip isn't programmed?

A transponder key has two jobs. The blade operates the ignition cylinder mechanically. The chip inside the key head talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the key. If those two things don't happen together correctly, the engine won't start. The immobilizer is specifically designed to kill the start signal when it doesn't get the right response from the chip.

So if someone cuts you a key blank without programming the chip, or programs the wrong chip, the key will turn in the ignition just fine and nothing will happen. The car isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Enrollment happens through the OBD port and matches the chip to your specific vehicle. That's what we do on site.

Do I need to be there for the whole job?

You need to be there at the start and the end. We verify ownership with your ID and registration before touching anything. After that, most people just hang nearby while we work. When the key is ready we test it in the ignition together before we're done. The whole job on a Solstice typically runs about 30 minutes.

I only have one key left for my Solstice. Is that a problem?

It's not a problem for making a replacement, but it's a situation worth getting ahead of. As long as you have one working key and the car starts, we can add a second key on site without any issue. The process is the same: cut a new blade to your vehicle, enroll the chip.

Where it gets harder is all-keys-lost. If you lose that last key, the car is stuck wherever it sits. You'd be looking at a tow, and the job itself becomes more involved. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is the easier and faster path. A lot of Solstice owners come to us after they've already lost key number one, which is exactly the situation you want to avoid.

My 2009 Solstice key turns in the ignition but the car won't start. Is this a transponder issue?

Maybe, but don't assume that first. A key that turns without starting can mean a few different things. The transponder chip could be unenrolled or failed. The blade could be worn to the point where it's not properly engaging the tumblers, which can actually prevent the system from reading the chip at all. There could also be an issue on the vehicle side with the immobilizer or ignition antenna ring that sits around the cylinder.

The diagnostic move is to check the key condition first, then look at whether the immobilizer warning is present on the dash after cranking. If you see a security-related warning, that points toward the transponder side. If there's nothing on the dash and the engine just cranks without catching, there may be something else going on entirely. We can sort through that on site.
