Yes, for most BMW models from 2006 through 2022. All-keys-lost on E90, E60, F30, F10, and X-series platforms involves reading the ISN code from the DME via OBD-II or bench EEPROM access, then generating and pairing a new key. We use Autel IM608 and VVDI2 BMW for this. G-series models with BDC2 modules from 2019 onward are more complex and require bench work, but are still serviceable on-site with experienced equipment. Comfort Access is BMW's branded name for its hands-free proximity entry and push-button start system. Sensors in the door handles and trunk detect the key fob within proximity range and unlock the vehicle without you pressing any button. To start, you press the brake and the Start/Stop button while the fob is anywhere in the cabin. Comfort Access keys require OBD-II programming to add or replace and cannot be self-programmed by the owner.

BMW dealer pricing runs $330 to $500 for older transponder and flip key platforms, and $500 to $1,000 for Comfort Access smart keys on newer F and G-series vehicles. That range often does not account for towing if you have no working key. Additionally, BMW dealers order replacement keys from their production facility and typically need two to three days before the key arrives and programming can begin. Start with the battery. BMW fobs use CR2032 cells that last two to four years, and a low battery will cause intermittent or no detection before it dies completely. If the battery is good, try the emergency start: use the metal blade inside the fob to unlock the driver's door via the handle cap keyhole, then hold the dead fob against the key symbol marking on the right side of the steering column, press the brake, and push the Start/Stop button. This passive RFID backup works on all BMW push-start models from 2010 onward. If that does not work, the issue may be the antenna or CAS module in the vehicle.

No. BMW has never supported owner self-programming on any model in any era. Even older E36 and E46 models require a locksmith or dealer to complete the programming process. All BMW platforms from EWS through CAS and FEM require professional OBD-II tools or bench EEPROM work to pair a new key. This is one of the things that makes BMW different from many Japanese brands that offered limited self-programming on older platforms.

Yes. BMW vehicles with Comfort Access are vulnerable to relay attacks, where thieves use signal amplifiers to extend the proximity signal from your fob through walls and trick the car into thinking the fob is nearby. This does not require any special code capture or hacking skill, just two devices and someone willing to stand near your front door while a partner stands near your car. Storing your fob in a Faraday pouch when at home completely eliminates this attack vector. BMW has pushed software updates for newer models that add a motion sensor to the fob, causing it to stop broadcasting when it has been stationary for a period of time.

The Display Key is BMW's touchscreen fob introduced on premium G-series models, featuring a small LCD screen that shows vehicle status, lock state, and climate controls. It is standard on higher trims of the 7 Series, 5 Series, and X7. Programming a Display Key requires the same CAS4-plus or BDC2 platform tools as a standard Comfort Access fob, with no additional OEM-only steps.
