How BMW 5 Series Keys Changed Over the Years
E39: Transponder Key with EWS3
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Texas 4C chip (PCF7935) inside talking to the EWS3 module in your steering column. Without that chip handshake, the engine will not fire. It is a standard blade with a CR2032 battery for the remote, and we program it through OBD-II right in your driveway.
E60/E61: Remote Head Key with EWS4
This is where BMW's security got serious. The E60 moved to an ID44T chip (PCF7945) and a high-security blade that cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. Four buttons, CR2032 battery, and the EWS4 immobilizer system means professional OBD-II programming is the only way to add a key. Later E60 models introduced CAS1 and CAS2 modules, which require a CAS dump or specialized tools like Autohex II.
F10/F11/F07: Proximity Flip Key with CAS3+
BMW gave the 5 Series push-button start and a proximity flip key with an ID47 chip. Five buttons, a CR2450 battery, and the CAS3+ immobilizer that requires ISN extraction from the engine computer before we can program anything. Some of these need server authentication on top of OBD-II access, which adds time but we handle it mobile with the right tools.
G30: Smart Key with CAS4
The newest generation runs a full smart key with an ID47 chip, laser-cut blade, and CAS4 immobilizer that requires BMW server authentication. Five buttons, CR2032 battery, push-button start. Here is where we are upfront with you: the G30 needs dealer-level server access for key programming, and we will tell you that before we roll out so you are not wasting time or money.
G30 LCI (Facelift)
The facelifted G30 keeps the four-button smart proximity fob with a laser-cut emergency blade and a CR2032 battery. Push-button start across the line, with an optional touchscreen Display Key on higher trims. We program these on-site in Ventura County, and we will confirm what your specific build needs before we roll out.
G60 Seventh Generation
The all-new G60 5 Series runs BMW's OS9 architecture, so the four-button smart fob pairs through a secure backend that has to be authenticated online during programming. Laser-cut emergency blade, CR2032 battery, push-button start, with an optional touchscreen Display Key on premium trims. Server-auth jobs like this are routine for us in your Ventura County driveway.
Which Key Does Your 5 Series Use?
The classic BMW diamond key. Standard blade with a transponder chip inside. You insert it and turn it to start.
A chunkier key with lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons built into the head. High-security blade that needs professional cutting equipment.
Your key stays in your pocket. Push the button to start. The blade flips out for emergency door access if the battery dies.
Slim smart fob with optional display screen. Laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. Full proximity, push-button start.
The G30 LCI smart fob stays in your pocket and starts the car with a button. Laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside, CR2032 battery. Higher trims could be optioned with BMW's touchscreen Display Key.
The G60 smart fob runs BMW's OS9 backend, so programming has to be authenticated online before the key will pair. Push-button start, laser-cut emergency blade inside, CR2032 battery, with an optional touchscreen Display Key on premium trims.

Common BMW 5 Series Key Problems
EWS Module Failure
Your E39 cranks but will not start, key icon stays lit. Classic EWS3 module failure in the steering column. Module stops recognizing the transponder. We test on-site and, if replacing, program your keys to the new unit in Oxnard.
CAS Unit Corruption
On E60 and F10s, CAS can lose sync with your keys or the engine computer, usually from a weak battery or botched programming. We read the module first to confirm. If corrupted, we restore and re-sync your keys on the spot.
Proximity Sensor Failure
The proximity antenna in your 5 Series picks up the key in your pocket. Failed, push the start button and nothing happens even with the key right there. Affects 2011-2020 models. We test the antenna circuit before quoting sensor, wiring, or fob.
High Security Blade Wear
Keys that stick in the ignition or barely turn the door, owners assume the lock is broken. Nine out of ten times it is the blade. BMW HU92 blades and laser cuts wear fast with daily use. We cut fresh on-site and test every lock in Thousand Oaks.
Can You Program a BMW 5 Series Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. The E39's EWS3 module requires specialized equipment like an AK90 programmer to read the module and write the transponder. There is no ignition-based learning procedure.
The EWS4 and CAS systems in the E60 require professional diagnostic tools for transponder programming. You cannot sync a new key through any ignition sequence or button combination.
CAS3+ requires professional OBD programming with ISN extraction from the engine computer. No DIY ignition procedure exists for this generation.
The G30's CAS4 system requires dealer-level tools and BMW server authentication. No aftermarket DIY method is available.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the E39 5 Series was the first BMW to come with a factory remote key fob that included a trunk pop function. Before that, you had to walk around and use the key in the trunk lock. It sounds small now, but in the late 1990s, that little button on the fob changed what people expected from a luxury sedan.
