I got a call out to Cold Spring in Montecito on a Tuesday afternoon. A woman had a 2017 BMW 5 Series sitting in her driveway, and the fob had been acting up for about a week before it stopped being recognized entirely. The dash was showing a key warning and the car would not go into ready mode.
She had already swapped the CR2032 herself, which was the right first move. But the problem was not the battery.
I pulled up, verified ownership, and started with the fob itself before touching the car. Housing looked fine, contacts were clean, battery was seated correctly. Then came the part she did not expect. I walked the car. Tested every button, checked the range from across the driveway, verified the door handle sensors on both sides, and ran three clean starts. She was standing there watching and said she figured I would just hand it over and leave.
That testing matters. It is the part that catches a partial enrollment or a sensor that was already going soft. Everything came back clean. She was back to normal before I had even packed up the car, and the total was a fraction of what the dealer in the area had quoted her just to look at it.
