Got a call from someone up in San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito. Her 2017 BMW 5 Series, the 530i with Comfort Access, had one working key left and she wanted a spare before that turned into zero keys and a tow bill.
Smart move. All-keys-lost on a G30 is a longer job because the BDC module needs a bench procedure or an extended security handshake through OBD. Having one working key on hand cuts the process down significantly.
I decoded her HU92 lock, laser-cut the new blade on site, then connected to the OBD port and talked to the BDC. The G30 uses an encrypted challenge-response between the fob and the Body Domain Controller. Once I had the security data read and the ISN calculated, the new NBGIDGNG1 fob registered into the next open slot.
Then the part I actually care about. I walked the parking area testing remote lock, unlock, and trunk release from about 40 feet out. Checked both front door handles for Comfort Access pickup. Started the car three consecutive times with the new fob, then three with her original, making sure neither one hiccupped.
She stood by the car watching me pace back and forth pressing buttons and said, "You look like you're trying to find cell signal." Fair point.
Both keys verified, every function clean. She got a spare before she needed a rescue, and it cost her a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
