2003 BMW 5 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from Heritage Square in Oxnard. A woman had one key left for her 2003 BMW 530i and the remote buttons had quit weeks ago. She'd been manually locking the doors and figured she'd deal with it eventually. Then the key started giving her intermittent no-starts, the EWS light flashing on the cluster, engine cranking but not catching.
By the time I got there she was already looking up tow trucks.
I checked the key first. The CR2032 was corroded, which explained the dead remote, but that battery has nothing to do with starting. The passive PCF7935 transponder inside the key head handles that. I put my IM608 on the OBD-II port and read the EWS3 data. The key's transponder alignment in the EWS was getting shaky, one of those things where the rolling code sync drifts just enough to cause intermittent rejection.
Re-synced the existing key's transponder to the EWS3 module, then cut and programmed a fresh spare remote head key, FCC ID LX8FZV, HU92 blade decoded right off her door lock. Tested both keys: remote lock, unlock, trunk release from 30 feet out, three cold starts each, and watched the EWS light on the cluster drop out within two seconds every time. That fast dropout means the immobilizer is reading the chip clean.
She said she'd been holding her breath at every ignition turn for two weeks. Now she had two working keys and no reason to hold anything.
