A guy near the Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard called me about his 2002 BMW 5 Series. Another locksmith had made him a key a few days earlier. Worked fine at first. Then one morning it cranked, fired for half a second, and cut fuel dead.
The other tech told him the DME was going bad. That is almost never the answer on these.
I pulled up and popped the glovebox liner to get at the EWS3 module. Read the 93C66 EEPROM with my VVDI2. The ISN stored in the EWS3 did not match what the MS43 DME expected. What happened is the previous locksmith wrote the transponder to the EWS3 but never synchronized the ISN between the EWS3 and the DME. BMW gives you a short grace window where the car runs anyway. Once that window closes, the DME kills fuel on crank. That is exactly what this owner was seeing.
I corrected the ISN sync, reprogrammed his PCF7935 transponder in the LX8FZV remote head key, and verified the rolling code exchange between the EWS3 and DME. Clean start, no fuel cutoff, no hesitation.
He had been ready to tow it to a dealer and spend his whole Saturday there. Instead he was driving again in under an hour, right there in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
