I got a call from a guy over in Downtown Oxnard, near the courts off Hobson Way. He'd already watched a few of my BMW videos before his key gave him any trouble, which made the call easy. No explaining what a remote head key is, no convincing him the job could be done outside a dealership. He just said the fob had been getting weaker on range for a couple months, and then one morning it stopped locking the car from more than a foot away.
He mentioned the factory fob on his 2001 5 Series and asked if I could just program a replacement on site. I told him yes, came out the same afternoon.
When I got there, I pulled the old key apart and checked the battery first. CR2032, original from the look of it. Voltage was low. Swapped it and tested range again. Still short. The remote circuitry in these older remote head keys can degrade even when the blade and transponder side are perfectly fine. A weak battery over time can stress the remote board in ways a fresh cell doesn't always fix.
I programmed a replacement key on site, tested every one of the three buttons from across the parking lot, did a few starts to confirm the transponder side was reading clean, and handed it over. He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him a lot more, and it would have taken a few days to get the key ordered. He just nodded and went back to his afternoon.
