2020 BMW 5 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does the mobile key replacement process work for a 2020 BMW 5 Series?

You call, give me your VIN and situation, and I confirm the right fob and blade for your specific vehicle. When I arrive, I verify your ID and proof of ownership against the VIN. Then I decode or read the blade cut, cut a new key, connect to your vehicle through the OBD port with BMW-capable diagnostic equipment, and register the new fob to the vehicle's electronic platform.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. The name on the ID needs to match the registration. I verify the VIN on site to confirm the correct key specs before I cut or program anything.

Q: My 2020 BMW 5 Series is showing a key-not-detected warning but the battery is new. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints on the G30 generation, and the battery swap isn't always the end of the story. A few things can cause it even with a fresh CR2032. First, check how the battery is seated. The contact clips on these fobs are easy to bend slightly when prying the case open, and a battery that looks seated may not be making solid contact. Press it firmly and retest before anything else.

Q: I lost my only key to my 2020 BMW 5 Series. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2020 5 Series is a bigger job than adding a spare, but it's done on site. The vehicle's electronic platform needs to be accessed at a deeper level to clear the existing key memory and register a fresh fob from scratch. It takes longer, plan for closer to 90 minutes, and the equipment required is more involved than a standard add-a-key.

2020 BMW 5 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked in a structure off the East Area 2 corridor in Santa Paula on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Guy had a 2020 BMW 5 Series, one working key, and a dealer quote for a spare that made him do a double take. He didn't lose his key. He just wanted a backup before that day came, which is honestly the smartest reason to call.

He'd called the dealer first. They told him the fob had to be ordered by VIN, that he'd need to bring the car in, and that the wait for the part could stretch past a week. He wasn't thrilled about any of that.

I drove to his place, confirmed his VIN and ownership docs at the car, and got to work. The 2020 5 Series key replacement isn't a five-minute job. The vehicle's electronic platform requires diagnostic-level access through the OBD port to register a new fob, and the blade has to be cut to match his lock profile. I decoded the door cylinder, cut the blade, and walked through the programming sequence with my BMW-capable equipment. About an hour, start to finish, right there in his parking spot.

I tested every button, confirmed the door handles responded to the fob, verified the car saw both keys, and handed it over. He compared the new key to his original. Looked identical. Worked identically.

He mentioned the dealer quote again on his way back inside. I told him what he paid instead. He nodded like he'd already moved on, which is the best reaction.

BMW 5 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2020 BMW 5 Series somewhere for a key replacement?▼

No. I come to wherever the car is, whether that's your driveway, your job site, or a parking structure in Santa Paula near East Area 2. The dealer route requires either driving in with a working key or flatbedding the car if you're locked out, and then there's often a wait for the key to be ordered by VIN before any work even starts.
