A guy in Oxnard Shores flagged me down at his brother's place. He had a 2000 BMW 5 Series, the E39, and his only key was getting flaky. Remote would lock the doors one day, then nothing the next. He wanted a second key he could actually carry every day, not just a backup sitting in a kitchen drawer.

OEM BMW remote head keys for the E39 come with the roundel on the housing and a dealer markup to match. The aftermarket blanks I carry use the same HU58 blade profile, same PCF7935 (ID44) transponder chip, same three-button layout, same CR2032 battery, and the same 315 MHz RF board. The functional difference in daily use is zero when the blank is properly sourced.
I cut the HU58 blade on my Condor, then pulled the EWS3 data through the OBD port to sync the new ID44 chip. Whole thing took about 25 minutes. Tested remote lock, unlock, trunk release. All three buttons, both keys, standing at the curb.
He flipped both keys in his hand like he was comparing weight. Same feel. The only visible difference was no BMW badge on the back.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing. Thin shells, wrong chip revision, bad micro-switch pads. I test every batch before it goes in the van. If the shells crack or the chips do not read, the whole lot goes back.
