F32 Generation (Pre-Facelift)
This is where security got serious. BMW built the F32, F33, and F36 around the EWS4.4 immobilizer system with an ID44 (PCF7952) transponder chip inside a 3-button smart key. Push button start, proximity entry, and a high-security emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Programming runs through OBD-II with BMW-specific tools, no shortcuts.
F32 LCI Facelift
BMW upgraded the facelift models to the CAS4+ module and swapped in an ID46 transponder chip. Still a 3-button smart key with push button start and the same CR2032 battery. The big change is under the hood: programming now requires OBD-II plus server authentication on some VINs, which means token-based verification during the key write. That extra security layer is exactly why this is not a DIY job.
G22/G23/G26 Generation
The current 4 Series, the G22 coupe, G23 convertible, and G26 Gran Coupe, moved onto BMW's latest electronic architecture. The key is a 3-to-4-button proximity smart fob with comfort access, a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside, and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is fully online server-gated through BMW OS, so a new key has to be authorized by BMW's servers before the car will accept it. We carry the tooling and account access to run that authenticated handshake on-site in Ventura County.
Which Key Does Your 4 Series Use?
Your fob handles proximity unlock and push button start. There is a hidden high-security blade inside for emergencies when the battery dies.
Same smart key form factor as the earlier models, but the internal chip and security module changed. Your 2017 or later fob talks to a CAS4+ system that requires server authentication for programming.

Smart Key Battery Drain
Your 4 Series smart key constantly polls for the car's proximity signal. Store the fob near the vehicle (hook by the garage wall counts) and the battery drains fast. Fresh CR2032, then keep the key 10+ feet from the car at home in Simi Valley.
CAS Module Failure
First check on a 2016-2019 that suddenly will not recognize any key: CAS module. Comfort Access handles all authentication; glitched, immobilizer locks everything. Sometimes a software reset over OBD-II clears it. Sometimes needs EEPROM read and rewrite.
Transponder Sync Loss
Worked yesterday, cranks but will not start. Usually follows a dead battery, jump start, or fob battery swap. Transponder lost sync with the ECU. Not broken; needs OBD-II reprogramming. We handle this for 4 Series owners in Thousand Oaks.
Can You Program a BMW 4 Series Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming exists for the 2014-2016 4 Series. The EWS4.4 immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools like Autohex or VVDI2 with BMW-specific software to write a new transponder.
The 2017-2019 facelift models use CAS4+ with server authentication on some VINs. There is no owner-level programming procedure. You need professional OBD-II tools and, in many cases, token-based server access to write a new key.
