I got a call from a Euro shop over in the College area of Ventura. Not from the car owner, from the shop itself. That is never a good opening.
What happened was this: the owner needed a key made for his 2017 BMW 4 Series. The shop had brought in another locksmith first. That locksmith attempted to access the body electronics module, hit an error partway through, and left. The car would not start. The module was in a fault state and was rejecting every communication attempt. The shop had already told the owner it might need to go to the dealer. Then they called me.
I pulled up to the bay and the car was just sitting there, completely dead to any key input. The other locksmith's attempt had interrupted the write cycle and left the module in a state where it would not accept new data or release the immobilizer. I have seen this before. It is not a death sentence for the module, but it does require bench work to recover.
I pulled the module, connected it to my bench programmer, and read out what was there. The backup data was intact enough to work with. I patched the corruption, wrote the corrected image back, and reinstalled the module. Then I used the restored data to generate and register a new four-button smart key on-site.
First start attempt, the car fired right up.
The whole job took close to two hours, which is longer than a clean all-keys-lost on a healthy module. But the alternative was a flatbed ride to the BMW dealer, a potential module replacement that would have cost significantly more, and however many days the owner would be without his car. I walked the shop tech through what had gone wrong and what the warning signs look like so they would recognize it early if it came up again.
The dealer was never going to be cheaper. It was not even close.
