A Euro shop in East Ventura neighborhood called me about a 2017 BMW 4 Series that was completely dead. Another locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost job on it, tried to unlock the FEM module, hit an error mid-write, and walked away. The EEPROM data was corrupted and the car would not power up at all. The shop was ready to flatbed it to BMW.
I brought my ACDP bench tool and pulled the FEM. On these F32/F33/F36 cars, the FEM replaced the older CAS3/CAS4 modules and handles everything from key authorization to body electronics. A bad write or a power drop during an EEPROM procedure can put it into a fault state where it rejects all programming. That is what happened here.
I recovered the backup data off the chip, patched the corrupted bytes, wrote it back clean, and generated a fresh key from the restored ISN. His smart key, FCC ID NBGIDGNG1, was the standard 4-button fob with the 434 MHz frequency for the North American market. The FEM came back online and accepted the new key on the first attempt. Comfort Access, remote lock and unlock, trunk release, all verified on site.
The whole thing took about two hours, which is longer than a normal key job. But the alternative was a tow to BMW, a potential FEM replacement on top of new keys, and a week or more without the car. I showed the shop guys what went wrong so they would know the signs next time.
