Faria Beach on a Saturday night is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. The parking area near the water, a couple walking back from dinner, and a BMW fob that had gone completely dark.
They had noticed it acting up earlier in the week. Short range, had to stand close to the door to get it to unlock. They figured it would sort itself out. It did not sort itself out.
By the time they got back to the car, the fob was not communicating at all. No lock, no unlock, the door handles were not sensing anything, and when they finally found the emergency blade tucked inside the key and got the door open, the car did start, which at least told me something useful before I even arrived.
I was in Ventura, about fifteen minutes out. Everything for the 2014 4 Series was already in the van. The right fob shell, the correct battery, the programming tools. I do not order parts when a call comes in.
I pulled up, popped the key open on the hood, and the CR2032 was sitting just slightly off-center. The contact on the positive side had a small bend in it, not dramatic, just enough that the battery was not making solid contact. I straightened the contact, seated a fresh battery correctly, and handed it back.
Tested every button, walked both door handles, confirmed the start button response. Everything working.
They had already called the dealer earlier that day and been told to bring it in Monday for diagnostics. That would have been a tow, a wait, a diagnosis fee, and then the actual fix on top of that. This was Saturday night, forty minutes total, and they drove home along PCH instead.
The battery and the contact. That was it.
