A driver in Downtown Ventura called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked near the waterfront, heading back to his 4 Series after lunch, and the car just would not respond to the fob. Doors stayed locked, no blink from the hazards, nothing. He tried the fob from about a foot away from the door handle. Still nothing. He'd already done the thing most people do and Googled it on the spot. He was convinced he needed a whole new key and had already looked up what the dealer charges.
I got there and asked him the usual: how long since he'd swapped the battery. He said he hadn't, ever. The car was a couple years old at that point and the original battery was still in the fob.
Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was reading low on my tester, borderline dead. Swapped it out, seated it correctly, and closed the shell back up. Walked the car: door handle touch unlock on both front handles, all four fob buttons, the instrument cluster. Everything responded exactly the way it should.
That was it. Battery.
He was a little embarrassed but also genuinely relieved, because the dealer quote he'd found online was not modest. He left having spent almost nothing and with a fob that worked like new.
Not every call is a full key replacement. Sometimes a four-dollar battery and someone who knows what they are doing is the whole job.
