How BMW Z4 Keys Changed Over the Years
E85: Remote Head Key with EWS3
A remote head key with a Texas 4D (PCF7936) transponder chip and a high-security HU58 blade. You turn this key in the ignition like a traditional BMW, but the EWS3 immobilizer has to recognize the chip before the engine will fire. Programming is done through OBD-II, which means we handle it right in your driveway with no dealer visit required.
E85 LCI: Flip Key with EWS4
BMW gave the Z4 a facelift and upgraded to a flip key with an ID44T (Texas 4D) chip and a high-security HU92 blade. The immobilizer jumped to EWS4, which added a layer of encryption. Still programmed via OBD-II, but the security is tighter, so the right tools matter more than ever on this generation.
E89: Smart Key with CAS3+
This is where BMW got serious about security. The E89 Z4 uses a proximity smart key with an ID46 chip and the CAS3+ immobilizer system. You never insert the key; just keep it in your pocket and press the start button. Programming requires server authentication and an ISN dump from the engine module, which is advanced work but well within what we do on-site every day.
G29: Online Server-Gated Smart Key
The current G29 Z4 moved onto BMW's newest electronic architecture, shared with the Toyota Supra it is built alongside. The key is a 3-to-4-button proximity smart fob with comfort access, a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside, and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is fully online server-gated through BMW OS, so a replacement key has to be authorized by BMW's servers before the car will accept it. We carry the tooling and account access to run that authenticated handshake on-site in Ventura County.
Which Key Does Your Z4 Use?
A traditional key you insert into the ignition. The transponder chip inside talks to the EWS3 immobilizer every time you turn the key.
The blade folds into the fob body. Same insert-and-turn ignition, but the EWS4 system uses stronger encryption than the earlier generation.
A push-button-start fob that stays in your pocket. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for when the fob battery dies.
The current G29 fob, shared with the Toyota Supra platform. Proximity entry, push button start, a laser-cut emergency blade inside, and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is gated behind BMW's online server through BMW OS, so a new key has to be authorized online before it works. We carry the tooling to do that on-site.
Z4 Key Replacement Pricing
Every price includes the key blank, precision cutting, transponder programming, remote sync, and on-site testing at your location in Ventura County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Getting a spare before you lose your only key saves you hundreds. Here is exactly how much.
Common BMW Z4 Key Problems
EWS Synchronization Failure
Your 2003-2008 Z4 cranks but will not start, especially after a dead battery or jump start. EWS3 immobilizer lost sync with the transponder. We resync the EWS through OBD-II on-site, usually about 20 minutes.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Culprit on 2003-2011 Z4s is almost always poor battery contact inside the fob housing. Remote head and flip keys both suffer. Terminals lose tension, so even a fresh CR2032 drains in weeks. We clean the contacts or replace the shell.
CAS Module Failure
First check on a 2009-2016 E89 that will not recognize any key: CAS3+ module itself. We run OBD diagnostics to see if it is communicating. If CAS has failed, we replace and reprogram on-site, saving a tow to the dealer in Oxnard.
Blade Wear on HU58/HU92
Z4 owners think the ignition cylinder is failing when the real problem is a worn key blade. HU58 and HU92 high-security cuts are precise, and years of daily use round the edges. We cut fresh to your VIN specs and test on the spot.
Can You Program a Z4 Key Yourself?
You cannot program the transponder chip yourself. The EWS3 system requires professional tools like Autohex or CGDI to write to the immobilizer. However, if you already have a working key with a programmed transponder, you can sync the remote lock/unlock buttons yourself using a simple key-in-ignition procedure.
The EWS4 system on the facelift E85 requires professional OBD-II programming for both the transponder and the remote. No DIY option here. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.
The CAS3+ immobilizer with server authentication makes DIY programming impossible. This generation requires an ISN dump from the engine module and specialized tools. We carry everything needed on every call, so there is no reason to attempt a workaround.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the E85 Z4's key system shares technology with the BMW 1 Series coupe. BMW reused the same EWS and early CAS architecture across both platforms to keep development costs down. So a two-seat roadster and a compact coupe ended up with nearly identical security systems under the skin.
