Got a call from a guy near Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park in Moorpark. His 2008 Z4 was sitting in the driveway of a gated hillside community, dead key, no spare. He had already called a tow company, but the steep, narrow roads leading up to his place were a no-go for a flatbed. I drove the van up and parked on the street just outside his driveway. The Z4 was unlocked because he had been trying to get it going with the old key, clicking the buttons over and over. The CR2032 was completely drained, but the bigger issue was the transponder side. The PCF7942 chip had stopped communicating with the CAS2 module.
I pulled my VVDI2, read the CAS2 through OBD, and built a new 3-button remote head key right there. HU92 blade cut on the laser machine in the van, fresh CR2032 seated, chip synced. Tested all three buttons, started the car twice, cycled the locks from both doors.
His car never left the driveway. He told me he had been sitting there since 7 a.m. trying to figure out how to get a flatbed up the hill. It was 9:30 when I handed him the new key.
