Guy in the RiverPark neighborhood in Oxnard called me on a Wednesday night. He had just flown back into town, took the shuttle to short-term parking, and his 2004 BMW Z4 was completely dead to the fob. Pressed every button. Held it against the steering column near the EWS ring antenna. Nothing.
Doors locked, car sitting there like a paperweight.

Once I got the door open, I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port and pulled data from the CAS2 module. His key was still registered in the system but the CR2032 inside the LX8FZV fob had gone completely flat. The transponder chip was not getting enough juice to handshake with the EWS, so the immobilizer just sat there ignoring him. I replaced the cell, resynced the remote to the CAS2, and tested all three buttons plus the start sequence.
He stood there watching, arms crossed, doing that slow nod people do when they realize it was a small fix. I tossed him a spare CR2032 for the glovebox.
He drove home that same evening. His Z4 never left the parking space he pulled into a week earlier.
