A guy out in Via Marina called me on a Wednesday afternoon. He had just gotten back from a work trip, took the shuttle to the garage, and his 2004 Z4 was completely dead to the fob. Nothing. He pressed the buttons standing next to the door, held the key close to the column, tried everything you try when you're tired and just want to go home. The doors stayed locked.

Once I got the door open mechanically, I plugged into the OBD port and pulled up the immobilizer data. His key was still registered to the car - nothing had been wiped, nothing had lost sync. The fob battery had just failed completely. On this generation, when the battery dies fully, the remote won't communicate and the car can behave like the key is foreign to it even in the cylinder. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, cleaned the contact terminals inside the housing which had a thin layer of grime on them, and resynced the fob.
Then I walked the whole thing - lock, unlock, tested every button, confirmed the car started cleanly and stayed running.
He drove home that evening. The car never left the spot he'd parked it in a week earlier. The dealer would have been two days of waiting plus a tow bill on top of whatever they charged for the key work. He saved a good chunk.
