A woman down by Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard called me mid-afternoon. Her 2005 Z4 roadster was sitting in the marina parking lot with the top down and zero working keys. She had one key that stopped turning in the ignition a week ago, and the spare had been missing since she bought the car used.
All-keys-lost on an E85 Z4 means bench work on the EWS3 module. I pulled the lower dash panel, traced the module behind the steering column, and pulled it. The EWS3 board inside had the typical Motorola HC912 processor. I read the ISN and key data off the chip, synced it with a fresh PCF7935 transponder in a new HU92 blank, and cut the blade to code on the truck.
While the module was out, I noticed some corrosion around one of the connector pins. Cleaned it, reseated everything, bolted it back in. Key slid into the ignition, turned clean, engine fired. Then I programmed the LX8FZV remote functions through the OBD port so all three buttons were live: lock, unlock, trunk.
She stood there watching the soft-top cycle from the remote and just said, "That is the first time that button has worked since I got the car."
The whole job took about an hour in a parking lot with a nice view of the harbor. No tow truck, no service advisor, no waiting room.
