2009 BMW Z4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2009 BMW Z4 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy near the trailhead off Moorpark Road, just up from the college area. He had parked his 2009 Z4 and hiked out, and when he came back, one key was gone. Not sure if it fell on the trail or stayed in his other jacket, but it was not in his hand and the car was not moving.

He called me from his phone with maybe fifteen percent battery left and gave me his pin. I loaded up for the Z4 before I left.

When I pulled in, he was sitting on the hood. The car was fine. It was just locked, and the one key he had was somewhere behind him on a trail he was not hiking again that afternoon.

I cut a replacement blade on-site, matched to his lock, and went through the programming process using my diagnostic gear connected to the vehicle. The whole job was done in the parking area. No tow, no waiting until the dealer opened a service bay, no ordering a key and coming back in three days.

He asked me how I happened to have everything for his specific car. I told him the Z4 takes a remote head key with a CR2032 and three buttons, and I keep that setup stocked because it comes up. He seemed like he expected this to be a multi-day situation. It was not.

The dealer was the afterthought he brought up on his own. He had already called them before he called me and got quoted a wait and a tow. The tow alone would have cost him more than my whole visit.
