How BMW 3 Series Keys Changed Over 20 Years
E46: The Diamond Key Era
A remote head key with a high security blade and an ID44 transponder chip inside. You turn this key in the ignition like a traditional key, but the EWS3 immobilizer module has to recognize the chip before the engine will fire. Three buttons on the fob, CR2032 battery, and programming happens through the OBD-II port under the dash.
E90: Flip Key and CAS Security
BMW stepped things up here with a flip key design and the EWS4 immobilizer system, also known as CAS1 or CAS2 depending on your exact year. The blade folds into the fob for pocket carry, and the ID46 chip inside communicates with the Car Access System module. Still programmed through OBD-II, but the security is significantly tighter. PIN retrieval from the CAS module is required before any new key can be added.
F30/F34: Smart Key with Server Authentication
This is where BMW security got serious. Your F30 uses a smart key with a Hitag-Pro ID47 chip, push button start, and comfort access that unlocks the doors as you walk up. The CAS3+ or CAS4 immobilizer requires server authentication for programming, which means the key has to be verified through BMW's online system. The blade is laser cut and hidden inside the fob for emergencies.
F80 M3: Performance Car, Premium Security
Same smart key platform as the F30, but the F80 M3 runs CAS4 exclusively with an ID47 chip and requires ISN matching to the engine control unit. Server authentication is mandatory. The key looks identical to the standard F30 fob, but the security handshake between key, CAS module, and DME is more involved. This one takes longer and costs more because of that extra layer.
G20: Online Server-Gated Smart Key
The current G20 3 Series runs BMW's newest electronic architecture, and the key reflects it. It is a 3-to-4-button proximity smart fob with comfort access, a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside, and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is fully online server-gated through BMW OS, so a replacement key has to be authorized by BMW's servers before the car will accept it. We carry the tooling and the account access to run that authenticated handshake at your location in Ventura County.
Which Key Does Your 3 Series Use?
The classic BMW diamond key. Fixed blade that goes into the ignition, with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons on the fob. If your key has a blade that does not fold, this is yours.
Press the button on the side and the blade flips out. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. The blade folds back in for easy pocket carry.
The proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your car unlocks when you grab the handle and starts with a push button. There is an emergency laser cut blade hidden inside the fob.
Looks just like the F30 smart key. Same push button start and comfort access, but the internal security is a step above. If you have an M3 from this era, this is your key.
The current G20 fob. Proximity entry, push button start, a laser-cut emergency blade inside, and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is gated behind BMW's online server through BMW OS, so a new key has to be authorized online before it works. We carry the tooling to do that on-site.

Common BMW 3 Series Key Problems
EWS Module Failure
3 Series cranks but will not start, immobilizer light steady or flashing. Likely EWS3 or EWS4 control unit failure on 1999-2013 models. The module that authenticates your key has stopped. We diagnose and swap in your driveway.
CAS Unit Corruption
Dead battery or a swap done without proper power-down sequence does it. CAS loses power mid-write, corrupts stored key data, forgets every key. Common on E90 and F30 in Thousand Oaks. We recover the PIN, reprogram keys, you roll.
Smart Key Battery Drain
First check on F30 or F80 M3 with intermittent starting: fob battery. Comfort access keeps the antenna polling constantly, burning CR2032s fast. BMW issued SI B61 13 14 for premature drain on 2012-2019. Fresh quality CR2032 solves it.
Blade Wear on High Security Keys
People think the ignition is going when the key gets hard to turn. Usually the blade. BMW high security blades wear, especially on E46 and E90 with thousands of insertions a year. We cut a fresh blade from your VIN code, no rekey.
Can You Program a BMW 3 Series Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. The EWS3 system requires reading the EEPROM from the immobilizer module with specialized tools like an AK90 programmer, then writing the data to a new transponder chip. There is no ignition based self-programming procedure.
The CAS module on the E90 requires professional diagnostic equipment for key programming. No consumer level DIY method exists. You need a locksmith or dealer with BMW specific tools.
Server authentication makes this impossible without professional equipment. The CAS3+ or CAS4 module has to verify the new key through BMW's online system. No shortcuts, no workarounds.
Same server authentication requirement as the F30, plus ISN matching to the DME. This is strictly a professional job with CAS4 level tools and BMW server access.

Did You Know?
The BMW 3 Series E46 introduced the first diamond cut laser track key in 1999, setting the standard for high security automotive key blades across the entire industry. Before that, most car keys were simple double sided cuts that a decent locksmith could duplicate in 30 seconds. BMW basically forced every other manufacturer to catch up.
