Over in the Peach Hill neighborhood in Moorpark, a guy flagged me down in the REI parking lot during his lunch break. His 2006 BMW 3 Series needed a replacement key and he was convinced the dealer was his only option. A BMW forum told him that. The dealer confirmed it. His neighbor with a BMW said the same thing.
All of them were either wrong or working off outdated info.
His E90 runs the CAS2 module, part number 61.35-6 943 791, with Hitag2 transponder security. I pulled up to his car, read the CAS2 through OBD with my diagnostic setup, and used a VVDI Key Tool to generate a new key with the correct PCF7942 chip matched to his module. Cut the HU92 blade right there on the spot.
He leaned against a shopping cart full of camping gear and watched the whole thing.
Lock, unlock, trunk release, all three buttons tested and working. Engine started clean on the first turn. He was back inside REI before his lunch was over.
The CAS2 doesn't care if the key gets programmed in a BMW service bay or next to a rack of hiking poles. It runs the same Hitag2 handshake either way. His dealer had quoted him an appointment the following week and a multi-day wait for a VIN-matched key order. I handed him a working key in about 30 minutes.
