2019 BMW 3 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Fair question, and BMW owners should ask it. Here is what to do before anyone shows up at your car: get the company name, ask for a BSIS license number, and get a firm quote for your specific vehicle before they drive out. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone and find reasons to triple it once they have you cornered in a parking lot.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. A properly done replacement on the G20 3 Series means the new fob is fully registered to your vehicle's body electronics. Lock, unlock, and the other buttons should all behave the same as the original. The comfort access door handles get tested, not just assumed. The emergency insert blade gets cut and verified. BMW forums have real documented cases of techs using the wrong tools and causing module faults that leave the car unable to start.

Q: My 2019 BMW 3 Series shows a key-not-detected warning but the car still starts if I hold the fob to the button. What is happening?

That is a classic low-battery symptom on these fobs. The comfort access system, which reads the fob passively as you approach, needs more signal strength than the start function does. So you lose door handle response and get the warning before you actually lose the ability to start. Holding the fob directly against the start button works because it is close-range communication that does not depend on the battery being at full strength. Try the CR2032 first.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2019 BMW 3 Series. Is that a much bigger job than just adding a spare?

It is. All-keys-lost on the G20 means there is no working fob to reference, so the process takes longer and requires a deeper level of communication with the vehicle's electronics to reset key memory and register new fobs from scratch. Add-a-key with a working fob is noticeably faster and less involved. If you still have even one functioning key, use it.

2019 BMW 3 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in RiverPark texted me while I was finishing a job across Oxnard. Her 2019 BMW 3 Series had a working key, and she already had the VIN pulled up on her phone. That kind of prep matters on a BMW more than almost any other car I do.

She was at a dog daycare, waiting on her dog, and had maybe a half hour. She needed a spare added because her only key was starting to feel unreliable, one of those slow-decline situations where you're not sure if it's the battery or something worse. The fob had a fresh CR2032 in it, so this was a legitimate concern.

I had the correct blank with me. With a working key and the VIN confirmed ahead of time, I went straight into the process using my diagnostic equipment to communicate with the body electronics and register the new fob. No waiting around for module reads to time out, no surprises. Cut the emergency insert blade, tested all four buttons, walked both doors for comfort access, confirmed start. She had a tested, working spare in her hand before her dog came back out.

She asked what the dealer would have quoted. I told her to call and find out. She already knew the answer was going to be a lot more and a lot slower.

BMW 3 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on BMW vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. BMW smart key work on the G20 platform requires professional diagnostic equipment to communicate with the body electronics and register new fobs. You want someone credentialed and insured handling that, not someone with a generic cloner and no paper trail. License number is available on request before I roll.
