A shop over in Moorpark, near the Mountain Meadows side of town, called me about a 2004 BMW 3 Series that was completely dead. Not "won't start" dead. Dead dead. Another locksmith had been out before me, attempted a key programming job, something went wrong mid-procedure, and he left. The car wouldn't communicate with anything after that.
The shop owner was calm about it, which I appreciated. He'd seen this before with BMWs. A bad write, a power hiccup during programming, a tool that disconnects at the wrong moment - any of those can leave the immobilizer module in a fault state where it rejects every attempt to talk to it. Once you're there, a lot of guys look at the error, pack up their tools, and tell the customer to call a flatbed.

This one took close to two hours. When it came back online and the car accepted the new key on the first attempt, the shop tech actually walked over and watched the dashboard lights cycle through. That moment where you're waiting to see if it holds - that's the part nobody warns you about.
The alternative was a flatbed to a BMW dealer, a probable module replacement, and a car sitting there for a week or more. The shop knew that. They'd already been down that road with other customers. That's why they called me instead of just dialing BMW roadside.
I carry the bench tools because E46 jobs can go sideways fast and recovery capability is the difference between a two-hour fix and a very expensive tow.
