Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2014 BMW 3 Series?

Years, with normal use and a battery swap when the range starts dropping. The electronics inside a properly built fob are durable. What BMW owners actually complain about is the shell. Even factory keys on this generation have a reputation for cracking along the seam or showing wear on the button surfaces faster than you'd expect from a vehicle at this price point. The programming inside holds up fine. It's the plastic housing that owners replace first.

Call me and I come back. That's the warranty. If the key loses start function, drops comfort access, or anything stops working under normal use, I fix it or replace it.

Here's why I take that seriously on BMWs specifically. The body electronics module on F30s can be corrupted by a bad programming attempt. It doesn't happen often when the job is done correctly with proper equipment, but it does happen when someone uses an incompatible tool or a fob that isn't matched to the car's security protocol. When that module gets corrupted, the repair cost at the dealer is significant. So I test every function before I leave the parking lot: lock, unlock, start, comfort access handles, the hidden blade, all of it. I'm not signing off on the job until the car behaves the way it should.

My 2014 3 Series shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fresh. What's going on?

Fresh battery rules out the obvious, but it doesn't rule out everything. A few things can cause a key-not-detected warning with a new CR2032 in the fob.

First, check the battery contact plate inside the fob. If the old battery corroded even slightly, there can be residue on the contact that breaks the circuit even with a new cell seated. Clean it before assuming the fob is dead.

Second, the internal antenna loop inside the fob housing can crack if the fob was dropped or sat under something heavy in a bag. The battery reads full voltage but the signal never goes anywhere.

Third, on these F30s, the car has interior antennas that read the fob at the door handles and near the start button. If one antenna has a wiring issue, the car may see the fob in some positions but not others. If the car starts when you hold the fob directly against the start button but not from the cupholder or seat, that's pointing at an antenna or the module reading it, not the fob itself.

I can sort out which of those it actually is when I get there.

Question 5

I have one working key for my 2014 3 Series. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Make the spare now. All-keys-lost on an F30 is a harder job than adding a second key while you still have a working one. With a working key present, the process is faster and the car's security system cooperates more cleanly. Lose that last key and the job requires more steps, more time, and the cost goes up. It's one of those things that's genuinely easier and cheaper before the problem happens.
