A couple near Moorpark Marketplace on a Saturday night came out to their 2001 3 Series and the fob did nothing. No lock, no unlock, no trunk. They figured they'd leave it and deal with it Monday.
Then one of them searched "BMW locksmith" and called me around 10pm.
I was about 15 minutes out. Their key was the LX8FZV remote head key, the 3-button diamond-shape fob with the HU58 blade that BMW used across the E46 generation. The CR2032 inside was dead flat. Not weak, dead. The little contact board inside the fob shell still looked clean, no corrosion on the battery terminals, so I swapped in a fresh CR2032 and resynced the remote frequency with my programmer.
Fob lit up on the first press. Locks cycled, trunk popped, and the EWS3 transponder in the key head read clean on start. The whole thing took maybe ten minutes, most of that spent walking them through what happened so they'd catch it earlier next time.
They drove home that night. The dealer alternative would have been leaving a BMW in a parking garage all weekend, then paying way more on Monday for the same battery swap and resync. When everything is stocked in the van, a 10pm Saturday call gets the same result as a Tuesday morning appointment.
