Guy in the Mountain Meadows neighborhood in Moorpark had just flown back from a week-long trip. Took the shuttle to short-term parking, sat down in his 2007 BMW 3 Series, and nothing. Fob wouldn't unlock the doors. Holding it against the steering column did nothing. The backup slot in the center console, nothing. The CAS3 module wasn't seeing the key at all.
BMW dealer could fit him in Friday. It was Wednesday. He found me online.
I got to the garage within 40 minutes. Picked the door open, connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port, and pulled the CAS3 data. His key was still registered in the system, all eight key slots accounted for. The problem was simpler than he expected: the comfort-access fob has a small internal rechargeable battery, and after a week sitting in a cold parking structure the cell had dropped below the threshold where the 315 MHz transponder can respond. The CAS3 needs to see the transponder before it'll do anything, start, unlock, any of it.
I replaced the internal cell, resynced the fob to the CAS3 through the diagnostic port, and handed him a spare mechanical key cut to his HU92 profile for the glovebox. Tested all four doors, trunk release, and remote start inhibit.
He drove home that same evening. His 3 Series never left the parking spot he pulled into a week earlier.
