Your M5 Key System, Explained
E39 (LCI Facelift)
BMW stepped things up here with the EWS3 immobilizer system, pairing an ID44 transponder chip inside a 3-button remote head key with a laser-cut blade. That chip talks to a ring antenna around your ignition, and if the EWS module does not recognize it, your S62 V8 is not going anywhere. Programming requires specialized BMW diagnostic equipment through the OBD-II port, so this is not a DIY job.
Which Key Does Your M5 Use?
Your E39 M5 uses a diamond-shaped remote head key with the transponder chip built into the key body. The laser-cut blade handles the door cylinders and ignition, while the chip communicates with the EWS3 module to let the engine start.

Common E39 M5 Key Problems
EWS Immobilizer Module Failure
The EWS3 module in your E39 M5 can fail outright. No key starts the car regardless of how new the battery is. Not a key problem, a module problem. We test before recommending so you do not pay for a key you do not need.
Remote Head Key Battery Depletion
Remote stops locking from a distance or only responds right next to the car. CR2032 in E39 keys drains fast from constant EWS communication. Pop the cover by twisting the ring counterclockwise, fresh CR2032 positive up. Still flaky, deeper issue.
Transponder Chip Delamination
People assume a bad ignition switch when the key turns but the engine will not start. On E39 M5s the culprit is often an ID44 transponder delaminated from the board. Moisture creeps in, EWS cannot read it. Full key replacement.
Ignition Switch Wear (Recall 02V053000)
We check this before key work on E39 M5s. NHTSA recall 02V053000 covers ignition switch contact disc wear that mimics immobilizer failure. Intermittent starting in Simi Valley heat or Oxnard humidity? Switch could be it. We verify before programming.
Can You Program a Key Yourself?
No DIY option exists for the E39 M5. Programming requires removing the EWS module and reading its EEPROM with specialized equipment like an AK90 programmer, then writing the transponder chip to match an unused slot. This is a professional-only job.
