2002 BMW M5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much harder is all-keys-lost compared to adding a spare when I still have one?

Significantly harder, and it takes longer. When you have a working key, adding a second is a relatively clean job through the diagnostic port. When every key is gone, the immobilizer module has to be accessed directly to extract the security data and generate new keys from nothing. On the E39 generation, that process is more involved than a simple spare add, and some configurations require bench work on the module itself.

Q: Are aftermarket BMW keys worth buying online before calling a locksmith?

Honestly, it depends, and the risk is real. Cheap fobs sold online vary a lot in quality. Some program fine, some do not pair correctly, and some fail within a few months. BMW's key system is particular about what it accepts, and a fob that looks right physically may not behave right electronically. If you buy one and it turns out to be incompatible, you have still spent money and still need a working key.

Q: My 2002 BMW M5 fob works sometimes and not others. Is the fob dying or is it a receiver problem?

Intermittent behavior on these usually points to the fob first. The remote head key on this generation has both a CR2032 and a small internal rechargeable cell. When the internal cell is low, the fob transmits weakly, which looks exactly like a receiver problem from the outside. The range gets short, response gets inconsistent, and sometimes it just does nothing. Drive the car for a while with the key in the ignition and let the internal cell charge up.

Q: Can I program a replacement key for my 2002 BMW M5 myself at home?

No. This generation requires diagnostic equipment to register a new key to the immobilizer. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. You need the right tools and the right access to the vehicle's security system. That is the whole job.

2002 BMW M5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Old Town Goleta, I got a call from a woman who had been parking her 2002 BMW M5 in a tandem spot at her apartment complex.

She set the fob down on the roof while she grabbed her bags, and it slid off and hit the concrete hard. Shell cracked clean, the blade snapped at the base, and a piece of the blade stayed stuck in the door lock. She had no spare. Zero working keys.

When I got there, the broken fob was in two pieces, but the internal electronics were intact. I was able to read the transponder data off the original, which meant I did not have to go through a full all-keys-lost procedure from scratch. That saved real time. I extracted the blade fragment from the lock, decoded it, and got to work cutting and programming two new keys so she would not be in this spot again.

The whole job took about 50 minutes. She went from nothing to two working keys and did not have to tow the car anywhere or wait for parts to be ordered.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause. What she paid with me was a fraction of that, and she walked away with a spare this time.

BMW M5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2002 BMW M5?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first, not the dealer. BMW dealer key replacements are some of the more expensive in the industry, and the 2002 M5 is not an exception. On top of the key itself, dealers typically bill separately for the cut, the programming session, and diagnostics. With EZ Car Keyz, you get the cut and the programming together, done at your location in Old Town Goleta or wherever the car is.
