I got a call from a guy parked near Lake Los Carneros, right by the trailhead off Stow Canyon Road. He had taken a walk, come back to his 2003 BMW M5, and the fob was gone. Checked every pocket, retraced the trail, nothing. He was standing next to a locked car with no way in and no spare.

When I pulled up, the car was sitting in full sun. First thing is always the door, so I used a pick tool to get in without touching the paint, and while I was in there I decoded the blade cut directly from the lock. The bigger part of the job on an all-keys-lost BMW from this era is working with the immobilizer system and the engine management computer together. They store a shared identifier, and a new key has to be enrolled against both. I read the relevant data through the OBD port, extracted what I needed from the engine computer, and used that to calculate and write a new key. The fob I built matched the factory FCC ID for this car. Three buttons, correct blade, correct chip enrollment.

He watched the whole thing from about ten feet back, which I actually prefer. Turned the key, engine came up on the first crank, no warning lights, no security indicator staying on.

He mentioned he had already called the dealer before reaching me. They told him the car would need to be towed in, they would need a few days to source the key, and he should expect to wait. I had him driving out of that lot the same afternoon for a fraction of what they quoted.

About an hour total from picking the door to handing him the working key.
