2001 BMW M5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than the BMW dealer for this car?

On a 2001 M5, yes, by a meaningful amount. Dealers on this generation typically itemize everything separately and the total climbs quickly once programming labor gets added. A qualified mobile locksmith covers the whole job for way less. The work is the same: blade cut to your cylinder, transponder programmed, remote synced, tested before I leave. The difference is you are not paying dealership overhead.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming, or are those extra?

All of it is included. The key blank, cutting the blade to your specific lock, programming the transponder, syncing the remote functions, and a full test before I leave your driveway in Storke Ranch. Dealers on these BMWs routinely separate every step into its own charge. You can end up with one line for the fob, another for the blade, another for programming labor, and sometimes a separate diagnostic charge before any of the actual work begins.

Q: My 2001 BMW M5 remote stopped working but the car still starts fine. What is going on?

Most of the time on these, it is the CR2032 giving out. The battery in this generation remote head key powers the transmitter separately from the ignition side, so the car can start normally while the lock, unlock, and other buttons go completely dead. Start with a fresh CR2032 and make sure the battery contacts are clean and seated flat, not just visually okay.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made if I only have one left and do not want to lose it?

Yes, and doing it while you still have a working key is the smart move. Having a spare means if the remaining key is lost or damaged, you avoid an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more to sort out. I can come to you in Goleta, cut a second blade to your lock, and program the additional remote head key while your original is right there. The whole job is done on site.

2001 BMW M5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Storke Ranch, a guy called me from the side of the road with half a key in his hand. The other half was still inside the ignition cylinder of his 2001 BMW M5.

Snapped clean. He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition needed to be drilled out and replaced. On a BMW, that conversation gets expensive fast, and he wanted a second opinion before agreeing to it.

I pulled up, took a look, and told him we were not drilling anything.

I used a proper extraction tool designed for these cylinders and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it from the wafer positions, cut a fresh blade to match, and got the remote head key programmed and synced. The new key went into the ignition and turned on the first try. The lock felt exactly as it did before because nothing had been forced.

He had been bracing for a repair that would have cost several times what I charged. The dealer was not even in the conversation at that point. He just wanted his car running and his afternoon back.

BMW M5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2001 BMW M5 key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it will be a fraction of what the dealer route costs. BMW dealers on this generation tend to break the job into separate line items: the fob itself, a blade cutting charge, programming labor billed by the hour, and sometimes a diagnostic fee on top of that. It adds up fast. With EZ Car Keyz, one price covers the key, the cut, the programming, and the mobile service to your location in Goleta.
