How BMW 2 Series Keys Changed Over the Years
F22/F23 Coupe and Convertible
BMW built the original 2 Series coupe and convertible around the CAS3+ immobilizer system with an ID44 transponder chip. Your key is a 3-button smart fob with a high-security emergency blade tucked inside and a rechargeable battery. Push-button start is standard, and programming requires server authentication, so this is not a DIY job.
F22/F23 LCI Facelift Coupe and Convertible
BMW stepped things up here with the mid-cycle refresh, swapping in a CAS4 immobilizer and an ID46 chip. The key still looks the same on the outside: 3 buttons, high-security blade, rechargeable battery. But the security behind it is more complex, requiring token-based server authentication for programming.
F45 Active Tourer
BMW took the 2 Series name in a completely different direction with this front-wheel-drive MPV. It runs a CAS3+ or EWS4.4 immobilizer with an ID44 chip, and the 3-button smart key with high-security blade matches the coupe system. The front-wheel-drive platform does change how we access certain modules, so we verify your VIN before rolling out.
F46 Gran Tourer
The 7-seat Gran Tourer shares its key system with the F45 Active Tourer: ID44 chip, EWS4.4 immobilizer, 3-button smart key with a rechargeable battery. Programming is handled the same way, through server authentication. The HU92 high-security blade profile is identical across both MPV variants.
G42/G87 Coupe (incl. M2)
The current G42 2 Series coupe, and the G87 M2 built alongside it, moved onto BMW's latest electronic architecture. The key is a 3-to-4-button smart fob with a laser-cut emergency blade and a CR2032 coin battery instead of the old rechargeable cell. Programming is gated behind BMW's online server, so every new key is authorized through BMW OS before it will start the car. We run that authenticated handshake on-site in Ventura County.
Which Key Does Your BMW 2 Series Use?
A proximity smart fob with push-button start. The emergency blade folds out for manual door entry when the battery dies.
Looks identical to the pre-facelift key, but runs on a newer CAS4 system with an ID46 chip. The programming process is different under the hood.
Same smart key design as the coupe, but paired to the front-wheel-drive Active Tourer platform. We verify your exact CAS generation by VIN before programming.
Identical key to the F45 Active Tourer. Three buttons, rechargeable battery, high-security blade. Programming requires server authentication.
The G42 and G87 M2 use BMW's current proximity smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade and a CR2032 coin cell. Programming is server-gated through BMW OS, so a new key has to be authorized online before it works. We carry the tooling to do that on-site.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes the key blank, high-security blade cutting, transponder programming, and on-site testing at your location.

Common BMW 2 Series Key Problems
Proximity Sensor Failure
The proximity antenna in your 2 Series wears with daily use. Push-button start works sometimes, or you hold the fob against the button. We diagnose on-site and reprogram or replace the sensor without a dealer visit.
CAS Module Fault
Key is fine, car acts like it does not exist. Classic CAS module glitch on 2016-2018 models. Comfort Access handles all key recognition; faulted, no battery swap will fix it. We reset or reflash CAS at your Oxnard location.
Battery Drain from Key Fob
People blame the rechargeable cell when the culprit is fob storage. Leaving a 2014-2016 fob inside the car near the steering column keeps proximity polling and burns the battery faster than it recharges. We test battery health and swap if degraded.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
We check EWS sync status first. After a dead battery or jump start, the immobilizer can lose its handshake with the key's transponder. Doors unlock, engine will not turn. Quick OBD reprogram resyncs on-site in about 20 minutes.
Can You Program a BMW 2 Series Key Yourself?
No self-programming procedure exists for this generation. The CAS3+ system requires professional tools with server authentication to program any new key.
The CAS4 system on the facelift models is even more locked down. Token-based server authentication is required, so there is no DIY path here.
Same story as the coupe. The CAS3+/EWS4.4 system needs professional diagnostic tools and server access. No onboard programming option exists.
The Gran Tourer shares the same immobilizer architecture as the Active Tourer. Professional programming with server authentication is the only way to add or replace a key.

Did You Know?
Back in 2014, BMW did something unusual with the 2 Series lineup. The F22 coupe was the last rear-wheel-drive coupe platform before BMW started shifting more models to front-wheel-drive architectures. The F45 Active Tourer and F46 Gran Tourer, both wearing the 2 Series badge, were actually BMW's first-ever front-wheel-drive production cars.
