2014 BMW 2 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

Ask for a license number and a firm written price for your specific vehicle before anyone rolls a truck. That's the filter. Scam operations quote a low number on the phone, then double or triple it in your driveway with charges for "programming" or "special BMW equipment. Some owners have reported being pressured into paying far more than the original quote for a key that worked inconsistently from day one.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

It should, yes. We program the key to the vehicle so the immobilizer authorizes engine start, and we test the remote functions before we leave. On the 2014 2 Series, if your trim includes comfort access, we verify that as well rather than just handing you a key and hoping.

Q: The fob battery is brand new but the car still shows a key warning on the dash. What's going on?

That's actually a known frustration with these fobs. A few things can cause it even with a fresh battery. First, the cell itself. Not all replacement batteries perform the same, and a low-quality cell can read fine on a basic tester but still fail to deliver what the fob needs for a proper handshake with the car.

Q: I found a replacement fob for my 2014 2 Series online for a lot less than the dealer wants. Can I just buy that and have it programmed?

Depends on what you bought. BMW keys in this generation are paired to the vehicle at the module level, and a used fob pulled from another BMW carries the previous vehicle's pairing. That has to be professionally wiped before it can be enrolled to your car. Not every tool can do that cleanly on these. A brand-new, unpaired key blank is a different story. That can be enrolled without needing a wipe first.

2014 BMW 2 Series Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already running calls on the coast road when the message came in. A couple out in La Conchita had gotten back to their car after dinner and the fob wasn't waking anything up. No door response, no interior lights, nothing. The car looked completely dead to the key.

They had already tried the obvious stuff. New battery in the fob, or so they thought. Turned out the replacement cell they'd bought from a gas station was reading low right out of the package. It was giving just enough power to look correct on a cheap tester but not enough to handshake with the car at distance.

I pulled up, swapped in a quality battery, reseated the contacts inside the fob housing, and watched it come right back. Door unlocked on the first press. Car started without hesitation.

The thing that made them pause was when I showed them the emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Neither of them knew it was there. I pulled it out, demonstrated how it drops into the hidden cylinder on the driver's door handle, and explained that even if the fob had truly failed, they would not have been stranded. They would have been inconvenienced, not stuck.

They mentioned the dealer had already quoted them a full key replacement when they called from the parking lot. I was on site, diagnosed, and finished before they would have even confirmed an appointment. The price was a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and they left with a working key and actually knowing how their own fob functions.

Are you licensed and insured to work on BMW vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmiths here. We carry full liability insurance. BMW key work in this generation involves pairing new keys to the vehicle's immobilizer at the module level, and you want someone who has passed the background checks and carries the proper credentials to be handling that on your car. We do.
