A battery sitting even slightly off-axis in the tray will give you that key-not-detected warning every time.

Third, and less common but worth knowing: BMW fobs in this generation can lose their sync after a dead-battery event. The fob may need to be re-synced to the car. That's a quick process but it does require the right equipment. If swapping to a fresh, quality battery and reseating the contacts doesn't clear it, that's the next step.

I found a replacement fob for my 2014 2 Series online for a lot less than the dealer wants. Can I just buy that and have it programmed?

There is no button sequence or ignition procedure that does this on a 2014 2 Series. If the listing you found says "self-programmable," that doesn't apply to this vehicle.
