A chiropractor over in the Fremont North neighborhood in Oxnard called me between patients. Her 2010 328i had stopped responding to the remote, and she needed the car working before her last appointment of the day. She had already called BMW service. They wanted her to tow it in and the earliest opening was Thursday. It was Monday.
I pulled into her office lot during a gap in her schedule.
First thing I did was decode the lock with my HU92 Lishi to verify the blade profile. Her car ran the CAS3+ module, non-Comfort Access, so the fob was the rechargeable slot key with three buttons. The internal battery was basically dead from months of five-minute drives across town. That tracks. The CAS3+ charges the key through the ELV (Electronic Lock Verification) contact in the ignition slot, and if you are only running the car for a few minutes at a time, it never catches up.
I cut a fresh emergency key blade, built the fob, and programmed it through OBD with the CAS3+ handshake. About 40 minutes, hood to trunk, including testing lock, unlock, and trunk release at range.
She walked out after her last patient to two working keys. Her car never left the parking spot. She didn't cancel a single appointment. The dealer route would have cost her a tow, a loaner, and most of a week.
