A guy near South Bank called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked, running errands, and his 2015 BMW 3 Series had started throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash even though the fob was right in his hand. The car had started fine that morning. Now it wasn't cooperating.
He'd already tried the obvious stuff. Fresh battery. Held the fob closer. Nothing changed. He was starting to spiral toward "blown module" territory before he even called me.
When I got there, I had him try starting with the fob physically touching the start button, which is the fallback method when the proximity read is weak or the internal antenna connection has shifted. The car started. That told me what I needed to know: the fob itself was still communicating, just barely.
I opened the fob on the hood. The CR2032 he'd installed was brand new, but the positive contact had a slight outward bow from the previous swap. Just enough to make intermittent contact instead of solid contact. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery properly, and ran through every button function and both the driver and passenger door handles to confirm the proximity entry was back to normal range.
It was. He drove off without a tow, without a dealer appointment, and without the multi-day wait he was already mentally preparing for. The fix was the right small thing done on-site. That's most of this job.
