Got a call from a guy sitting in the parking lot at Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2015 BMW 3 Series wouldn't see his key. iDrive was showing "No key detected" and the start button was doing nothing. He'd already tried holding the fob against the steering column, which is the right backup move, but still nothing.
When I got there, I checked the fob first. CR2032 was completely dead, and the battery clip inside the NBGIDGNG1 housing had a green film on it. Corrosion. New battery wasn't going to fix that alone.
I cleaned the contact, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested the fob output. Signal was back, but the car still wasn't responding normally. Comfort Access wouldn't trigger from the door handle, and the remote range was about four feet. That pointed at the FEM needing a key refresh.
I connected through the OBD port and ran a key synchronization on the FEM. Once the module re-learned the fob's rolling code data, all four buttons came back, Comfort Access worked from normal range, and the start button fired the engine clean.
He thought he needed a new key. He needed fifteen minutes and a tech who knows what the FEM does on these F30s. He drove out of that lot spending a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
