A Euro auto shop near Centerpoint Mall in Oxnard called me about a 2016 BMW 3 Series that was completely dead. Not dead battery dead. Module-bricked dead.
Here's what happened. The owner lost his keys, the shop called a locksmith, and that locksmith attempted a FEM unlock over OBD using what I'm guessing was a Yanhua Mini ACDP or similar, got a write error mid-procedure, and left. Packed up and drove away. Now the FEM was stuck in a fault state, the CAN bus wasn't waking up, and the car wouldn't even crank. The shop thought the module was fried.
I brought my ACDP bench tool and pulled the FEM out to work on it directly. Read the EEPROM backup, found the corrupted ISN data block, patched it, wrote it back clean. Then I generated a new smart key from the restored data, the 4-button fob with FCC ID NBGIDGNG1. Module came back online. Car accepted the key on the first attempt. I walked the shop tech through what went wrong so he'd spot it if another locksmith ever left them holding the bag like that.
Took about two hours, which is longer than a normal key job. But the alternative was a flatbed to BMW of Camarillo, a potential FEM module replacement, and easily a week without his car. I keep bench tools on hand specifically for BMW module recovery because this exact scenario comes up more than it should.
