Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on BMW jobs?

We use OEM-specification fobs that are matched to what the vehicle security system expects for this generation of 3 Series. On a vehicle this involved, cheap sourced-online fobs are a real problem. The fob hardware has to meet the signal and encryption requirements of the module, and a lot of the low-cost options circulating on Amazon and eBay do not. BMW owners on forums have documented cases where a bargain fob appeared to program correctly, then fell out of sync within weeks. Some report that it caused extra diagnostic time to clean up afterward. We carry fobs we have tested on these vehicles. How long should a replacement key last on a 2017 3 Series?

Years, with normal care. The internal electronics are not the weak point on these fobs. What BMW owners actually complain about is the physical shell cracking, the buttons wearing through, and the key ring loop breaking. The electronics underneath tend to outlast the housing. Change the CR2032 every couple of years or sooner if range starts dropping, and the programmed data inside the fob stays intact through a battery swap.

On the technical side, there is a real reason to take this seriously on a BMW. The module that manages key authorization on this generation is not cheap or easy to replace if something goes wrong during a sloppy programming job. BMW forums have documented cases where a bad key procedure caused module faults that ran up four-figure repair bills at the dealer. That is not a scare tactic, it is just the reality of working on a tightly integrated European system.

I test every function before I leave: all buttons, door handles, the start button, and the synchronization status. If something looks off, we do not call the job done. My work is covered, and I am not going to leave a 2017 BMW in Sea Air half-working.

I lost both keys for my 2017 3 Series. Can you still make a replacement without a working key to start from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation is a more involved job than a simple add-a-key, but it is something we handle. The process requires clearing the existing key authorizations from the module and enrolling a fresh key from scratch through the diagnostic port. It takes longer, typically in the 60 to 90 minute range depending on how the module responds, and it does require the right equipment. Any fobs that were previously registered and are now missing get wiped out so they cannot be used to start the car. Worth knowing going in: if those old keys turn up later, they will not work anymore.

My comfort access stopped working but the start button still recognizes the fob. What is going on?

This is one of the most common complaints on this generation, and the fob is usually not the culprit.

Comfort access, meaning the touch-to-unlock and touch-to-lock on the door handles, runs through its own antenna and sensor circuit. If the start button still reads the fob reliably, that tells you the fob's signal is fine. What you are more likely looking at is a door handle antenna issue, a wiring connection, or occasionally a module configuration that has dropped the comfort access function while leaving the rest intact.

A weak CR2032 can also reduce the effective range enough that the handle antennas stop picking up the fob even though the cabin antennas, which are closer and stronger, still catch the signal for start. So swap the battery first. If comfort access comes back, you are done. If it stays dead on one door or all doors while start still works, that is a diagnosis conversation, not a new fob conversation.
