Got a call from a guy near Centerpoint Mall in Oxnard around midnight. His 2010 Z4 sDrive30i was sitting in his driveway and the only key he had just stopped turning the ignition. He said he wiggled it, tried warming it up with his hands, tried his wife's hairdryer on the lock cylinder. Nothing.
He was ready to call a flatbed in the morning and have it towed to the BMW dealer. I told him I could come out right then.
When I got there, I checked the key blade first. The cut was worn down on a couple of positions, enough that the wafers in the ignition weren't lining up anymore. The transponder and remote head were still fine. The CAS3+ module was healthy, no faults stored.
I cut a fresh HU92 blade to code on my mobile machine, set it into a new remote head shell with his existing ID7944 chip, and programmed it through the OBD port using the CAS3+ read procedure. Whole thing took maybe 35 minutes, most of that just letting the software do its timed handshake.
He sat on his front steps watching. When I handed him the new key and it fired right up, he just nodded slowly like he was still processing that a locksmith showed up at midnight.
No tow. No waiting for the dealer to open. A fraction of what they would have charged him.
