There's a parking lot just off the water near Ventura Harbor, and that's where I met the owner of a 2019 BMW 4 Series that technically started but wouldn't run.
He'd already paid another locksmith. The key was cut right, the fob looked fine, and the engine would crank. But it would fire for a second and then die. Every time. He said the first guy told him the body electronics module had gone bad and that BMW was the only option from here. He walked away and left this guy with a car that wouldn't move.
I've seen that symptom before. The body electronics module was almost certainly fine.
On these F-series BMWs, the immobilizer doesn't just need the key to be present. It needs the key, the body electronics module, and the engine control unit to all share the same internal security number. If whoever programs the key doesn't read that number from the engine control unit and write it into the key correctly, the engine management won't release fuel. It cranks. It catches for a second. Then it shuts down. It looks like a module failure. It isn't.
I connected through the OBD port, read the security data from the body electronics module, cross-referenced it with the engine control unit, and confirmed what I suspected: the security number hadn't been written to the key at all. The previous locksmith had completed half the job. I completed the rest, verified the sync across all three components on the scan tool screen, and ran three consecutive start cycles to confirm it was holding.
He asked me to show him the confirmation on the tool, which I did. Then he asked what the dealer would have charged if he'd towed it there from the start. I told him honestly: way more than what he paid me, and that's before adding the tow.
The part that stayed with me was that he'd already spent money on a job that was done wrong. My job was just to finish what should have been done the first time.
