A guy near Lotusland in Montecito had a 2016 528i that cranked but killed fuel after about two seconds. Every time. He had already paid another locksmith to make a replacement smart key, and it worked fine for three days before the car just quit on him. That locksmith told him the DME was fried.
The DME was not fried.
What happened is the other tech never finished the ISN synchronization between the CAS4+ and the DME. BMW's immobilizer layers it: the CAS4+ module on board 5WK49662 holds one half of a shared secret number, and the MEVD17.2 engine computer holds the other. If those two don't match, the car runs on a temporary grace window, then locks you out hard. No fault code you can clear your way out of. The EWS/CAS tampering flag gets set and that is that.
I pulled CAS4+ data with my VVDI2, confirmed the ISN mismatch, resynced the CAS to DME, and reprogrammed his NBGIDGNG1 fob from scratch. Four-button smart key, comfort access, the whole thing. Engine start was clean. No crank-and-die, no fuel cutoff.
The difference between a BMW key that lasts and one that dies after a few days is that ISN sync step. I verify it on every single BMW job because a callback on one of these is bad for everyone.
