There is a watch repair shop tucked into the Eucalyptus Hill area of Montecito, and the owner drives a 2016 BMW 5 Series. He called me because a key another locksmith made him three days earlier had stopped working. Not gradually. Just stopped. Car would crank, almost catch, then cut out like someone pulled a switch.

The other locksmith had gotten far enough to make the car appear to accept the key, but the sync was off. BMW's system ran on what amounts to a provisional window, then shut it down.
I read the module, corrected the synchronization, and re-verified the enrollment. Clean start. No cutoff. He stood there watching it idle like he was waiting for it to change its mind.
He asked what the dealer would have said. Probably a module replacement, I told him. That conversation would have started expensive and gotten worse from there. What he actually needed was the job done right the first time, which is what he got the second time, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged just to look at it.
