Out in El Rio, off Oxnard, a guy called me late on a Thursday. He had a 2010 BMW 5 Series and his key fob had died -- not the battery, the whole fob. He said it had been acting up for weeks, range getting shorter, doors not locking right from distance. Then one morning it just stopped responding entirely.
He had used the emergency blade to get inside the car. That part worked. But when he put the fob in the ignition and turned it, the car recognized there was no valid signal coming from the fob and would not let the engine run. He described the warning on the dash as something about the key not being detected. He had been sitting in his own driveway for an hour before he called.
I told him to have his VIN ready when I pulled up. With the VIN I already knew the security generation, the key profile I needed to cut, and what tools to load before I left.
I worked on the hood of my van right there in his driveway. I built out a replacement fob, cut a new blade to match his lock profile using the VIN data, and ran the programming sequence to register the new key to his immobilizer module. The old dead fob got wiped out of the system at the same time. Start to finish, about 45 minutes under a work light.
He asked me what the dealer would have quoted. I told him to think about it this way: they would have charged him for the part, for the programming labor, and probably a diagnostic fee on top, and he would have needed a tow because the car was not drivable. Then he would have waited a few days for the key to be ordered. He nodded and said that tracked, because a friend of his had gone through exactly that on a different BMW.
He drove it before I packed up. Everything worked. He seemed more relieved than anything else.
