2013 BMW 5 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is an emergency key and why does my BMW have one?

The emergency key is the small metal blade folded inside your smart fob. It's there as a mechanical backup for situations where the fob can't do its job electronically, whether that's a dead fob battery, a dead car battery, or an electronic fault of some kind. On the 2013 5 Series, the driver's door lock cylinder is concealed behind a small cover on the handle surround.

Q: How long does the dealer actually take for a BMW key replacement, and what is involved?

Longer than most people expect. The dealer has to order the key by VIN, and availability varies. Owners on BMW forums have reported waits ranging from a few days to several weeks depending on the specific fob configuration and where parts are in the supply chain. Once the key arrives, programming typically takes another appointment block of one to three hours at the dealership. With EZ Car Keyz, the job is done in one visit at your location in Montecito.

Q: My 2013 5 Series shows a key warning on the dash but the fob is right in my hand. What is going on?

This is one of the most common calls I get on this generation. A weak fob battery can cause exactly that situation: the car sees the fob just well enough to know it's there but not well enough to fully authorize. You get a key-not-detected warning or a general key warning on the instrument cluster, even though you're holding the fob. The other thing that trips people up is signal interference.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself for my 2013 BMW 5 Series?

No. The key pairing on this vehicle requires professional diagnostic equipment. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. The fob has to be registered to the car through the OBD port using BMW-capable tooling. If you already bought one online, that's not a total loss. The fob itself may be usable. You'll just need a tech to pair it.

2013 BMW 5 Series Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Birnam Wood, Montecito, on a Tuesday morning. She had her 2013 BMW 5 Series sitting in the driveway and wasn't going anywhere.

The fob had stopped being recognized by the car, and when she tried the door, she realized she didn't even know the emergency blade was built into the fob. She'd been standing outside her own car for twenty minutes before calling me.

When I pulled up, the first thing I did was show her the blade release on the fob. She had no idea it was there. We got the door open in about thirty seconds using the hidden cylinder behind the handle cover.

Once inside, I checked the fob battery. It was reading low enough to cause intermittent recognition failures but not completely dead, which is actually the trickier situation. A totally dead battery is predictable. A weak one throws the immobilizer into question, and owners start assuming the worst. I put a fresh battery in, reseated the contacts, and walked through a full function check: door lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons.

The car recognized the fob immediately. No module issue, no programming job, no tow to the dealer. She mentioned the dealer had been suggested to her by a neighbor, who said BMW key problems always meant a big bill.

Not this one. She was backing out of the driveway before I finished writing up the ticket.

BMW 5 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the BMW dealer to get a replacement emergency key or fob for my 2013 5 Series?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right BMW-specific diagnostic tooling can handle this on site. The 2013 5 Series does use an encrypted, vehicle-paired key system, and that intimidates a lot of owners into thinking the dealer is the only path. It isn't. What the dealer requires is ordering the key by VIN through their supply network, waiting for it to arrive, then scheduling a programming appointment. That process can stretch across multiple days or longer depending on parts availability.
