A woman over in Manning Park in Montecito called me about her 2013 BMW 5 Series. The car threw an ELV fault that morning. Steering lock warning on the iDrive, no crank, nothing. Dead in her driveway.

I cleared the ELV fault, cycled the steering lock through its test routine, and verified her fob, an YGOHUF5662 with the Hitag Pro chip, was communicating correctly the entire time. The key was never the problem. The lock was never the problem. A weak battery caused a cascade that looked like expensive hardware failure.
She watched the fault code on my screen go from active to cleared. Then she just sat there for a second, processing how close she came to paying for a module she never needed. I told her to get the battery tested or replaced soon, because the same fault would come back otherwise.
