I was over near Coast Village on a Tuesday afternoon when I got the call. The owner had a 2018 BMW 5 Series sitting in her driveway and a fob that had gotten wet. Not submerged, just caught some rain on a walk back from the shops. The car was reading the key intermittently, sometimes starting, sometimes throwing a key-not-detected warning, and she had no spare.
She mentioned she'd already called the dealer. They told her to have it towed in, said they'd need to evaluate the fob and possibly the vehicle security system, and that she should plan on leaving the car for a day or two. When I got there I opened the fob and found exactly what water does to a CR2032 cavity: a faint film of corrosion on the battery contact and a contact clip that had started to oxidize. The battery itself still had voltage, but the connection was inconsistent. Cleaned the contacts, fresh CR2032, snapped it shut.
Then I walked every function. Touch unlock on both handles. Lock from the fob. Held it near the start area for the backup proximity check. Ran all four buttons. Everything came back clean. The car stopped hesitating on startup and the dash stopped showing the warning.
She did not need a new fob, a tow, or a day at the dealer. She needed someone to show up with the right tools, take the fob apart carefully, and actually look at what was happening inside. That's the job most of the time.
