2009 BMW 5 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost all my keys. Is a 2009 BMW 5 Series all-keys-lost situation harder than a normal replacement?

For this vehicle with a mechanical key, all-keys-lost is not the complicated scenario it is on newer BMWs. There is no working key required to cut a replacement. A locksmith either pulls your key code through VIN-based factory records or decodes the lock cylinder directly. Either method produces a cut key without needing an existing key to reference. The job takes longer than duplicating a key you hand me, but it is a field job done at your car.

Q: Are aftermarket BMW key blanks cheaper and do they actually work?

For a mechanical key, the blank just needs to be the correct profile for your lock cylinder. The concern with cheap blanks is material quality and dimensional accuracy. A blank that is slightly off in width or thickness will either not insert cleanly or will wear your cylinder faster than it should. I use blanks that are verified to spec for this vehicle.

Q: My 2009 BMW 5 Series key turns but the ignition feels stiff. Do I need a new key or is the cylinder going?

Both are worth checking before you replace either one. A worn key that has lost definition in its cuts will make the cylinder work harder, which over time damages the wafers inside the barrel. If your key is visibly rounded off at the peaks, start with a fresh cut key and test the feel. If the stiffness is the same with a new key, the cylinder itself may have worn wafers or debris.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for my 2009 BMW 5 Series on site, or do I have to go somewhere?

On site, at your car, in Victoria Estates or anywhere else in Oxnard. That is exactly how this works. I come to you.

2009 BMW 5 Series Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Victoria Estates, over in Oxnard, who had snapped his key in the ignition cylinder. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean, with the tip still seated inside the barrel.

He had already tried the broken-key extractor kit he found at a hardware store. All he did was push the fragment deeper. By the time I pulled up, the piece was fully recessed and the cylinder wouldn't accept anything.

I brought the broken-key extractor set I actually trust, the one with the hooked picks sized for European cylinders, and worked the fragment out without pulling the whole cylinder. Once the barrel was clear, I decoded the existing cuts from the cylinder profile rather than fishing for a key code, cut a fresh blade to match on site, and tested it through several full lock and unlock cycles before calling it done.

The whole job happened in his driveway. He didn't tow anything. He didn't wait for a VIN-ordered blank to ship from a dealer. He was back in his car the same afternoon, and the cost was a fraction of what the dealer quoted when he called them first.

BMW 5 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2009 BMW 5 Series key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. For a mechanical key vehicle like this, the job is cutting a new blade to your car. A dealer will still charge a premium for the visit, the blank, and the labor. A mobile locksmith comes to you in Victoria Estates or anywhere in Oxnard, cuts the key on site, and the total is way less than what the dealer will want.
