Got a call around 3 AM from a guy in Oxnard, over near the Five Points Shopping Center area. His 2008 5 Series was sitting in the driveway and his only key had just stopped being recognized. Dash was showing "Key Invalid" on the iDrive screen. He figured he was waiting until morning and calling a tow truck.
I told him to hang tight.
Pulled up to his house about 40 minutes later. Connected my programmer to the OBD-II port under the dash and read the CAS3+ module. His car had the comfort access system, so the original key was the standard 66 12 6 986 585 fob with the integrated emergency blade. The CAS3+ showed one key registered, status: failed sync.
Programmed a new fob right there on the driveway. Cut the emergency blade to match his door lock. Tested comfort access on both front doors, trunk button, push-to-start, and the remote lock/unlock. Everything came back clean.
He stood there watching the whole thing happen under a porch light. Said he had already looked up what the dealer wanted and how long it would take. The part alone through BMW runs a few hundred, then there is the programming labor, and they would not have touched it until sometime the next afternoon at the earliest.
Whole thing took me about 35 minutes on a dark street at 3 AM. He drove to work that morning.
