1999 BMW 5 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got the call out of Woodcreek on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had a 1999 BMW 5 Series sitting in his driveway and a story that started with another locksmith.
He'd already paid someone else to cut and program a replacement key. The blade turned, the engine cranked fine, and then it died. Every time. The first guy blamed the immobilizer module and walked off the job. That was the whole story: money spent, car still not starting, and now he needed someone else to actually finish it.
I asked him one question before I drove over: did the other locksmith ever read the security data from the engine control unit, or did he go straight to key programming? Long pause. He didn't know. That told me enough.
When I got there I ran a full verification before touching anything. The immobilizer module itself was reading correctly. The issue was exactly what I suspected: the key had been programmed without completing the security sync between the module and the engine control unit. On a late-nineties BMW like this, the key, the immobilizer module, and the DME all have to share the same internal security number. Skip that step and you get exactly what he described: crank, brief run, immediate kill. The engine computer doesn't release fuel until it sees a match across all three. That's by design.
I pulled the security data from the DME through OBD, completed the sync, and tested the start three times in a row. Clean every time. Then I walked him through what the tool screen was showing so he wasn't just taking my word for it.
He mentioned the dealer quote he'd gotten before calling the first locksmith. It was a lot. He'd already paid one guy and still wasn't driving his car. What I charged him was a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and this time the job was actually done.
