2004 BMW 5 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

A remote head key is one piece: the blade, the transponder chip, and the lock and unlock buttons are all built into the same unit. Your 2004 BMW 5 Series uses this setup. When you insert the key and turn it, the transponder in the head communicates with the immobilizer. If that signal isn't recognized, the engine won't run, even if the blade is cut perfectly.

Q: My BMW is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032. Seriously, do that first. A low battery on the E60 remote head key will cause inconsistent ignition reads and trigger that warning even when the key is physically in the barrel. Pull the battery, look at how it's seated, make sure it's making clean contact with both terminals, and put in a fresh one. If that doesn't clear it, try holding the key closer to the ignition barrel when you turn it.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

No. The 2004 BMW 5 Series does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding a new key. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button sequence, nothing like that. Registering a new key to the immobilizer on this vehicle requires a diagnostic tool that can communicate with the system over the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, the part itself may be fine, but it still needs a tech with proper equipment to pair it to your car.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2004 BMW 5 Series. Is an all-keys-lost situation something you can handle?

Yes, and it comes up more than you'd think on E60s this age. All-keys-lost means the immobilizer has no active keys in memory, so the car won't start at all. We access the system through the OBD port, clear the existing key data, and register fresh keys to the vehicle. The blade gets cut on site to match your lock. The job takes longer than a simple spare, so plan for a bit more time on the driveway.

2004 BMW 5 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Carriage Square, Oxnard, on a call for a 2004 BMW 5 Series. The owner had already been to a shop that told her they could handle it. They couldn't. She came home with the same dead key and a bill for the diagnostic.

She needed a working spare and wanted to understand what had actually gone wrong with the original. The original fob had a clean blade, no cracks, but the remote was dead and the car had been throwing a key warning on startup. She'd replaced the CR2032 herself, which was the right first move, but the new battery was sitting slightly off-center in the tray and wasn't making full contact. That alone will kill the remote range and cause inconsistent startup behavior on these.

I reseated the battery, verified contact, and tested the original key first. Remote came back. Then I got into programming the spare through the diagnostic port, registered it to the immobilizer, cut the blade to match the lock, and walked every function on both keys before I packed up.

She asked what the dealer would have charged. I told her to call and find out if she wanted, but that the number she'd get from me was a fraction of that. She laughed. Said the other shop had charged her nearly as much just to tell her nothing.

Real tools, real license, real van with the name on it. That is the whole pitch.

BMW 5 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes. The 2004 BMW 5 Series has a physical ignition barrel, so a broken blade stays in the cylinder. We extract the broken piece on site using proper lock extraction tools, decode the lock to get the cut data, and cut a new key to match. No tow, no ignition replacement. Once the new key is cut and programmed, you test it right there on the car. The whole job gets done in the driveway.
